Floor Lamp Mission Style
How do I fix the switch on a floor lamp?
We have a floor lamp with the standard knob at the top that you turn, and it clicks on and clicks off. Kinda like this.

Now it only lights between the clicks, and it is impossible to make it stay between the clicks without my hand on the knob. How do I correct this? Warning: I am not mechanically inclined! Is there a straightforward adjustment I can make for this?

If it’s a three-wattage bulb (light level changes with each click when it’s working properly) you may want to start by replacing the bulb. The top of the bulb will have three wattage ratings printed on it such as 30-70-100. That may solve your problem. If the 70 watt filament is broken the lamp will work on alternate steps of the switch – which sounds like your problem.
If that fix doesn’t work or it is a single wattage socket you will probably have to replace the socket/switch assembly. The repair is actually quite simple, but if, as you say, you are ‘mechanically challenged’ I would ask a neighbor who is not, to do the repair. You mention adjustment – it really isn’t worth the time or trouble to try to fix the switch. If yours is a standard everyday variety lamp with the switch mechanism as part of the socket the fix takes about 5 minutes and is simply a matter of replacing the defective socket and switch assembly. Oddly enough, if the switch is separate from the socket assembly the repair will be slightly more difficult, but still ‘no big deal’.
As an aside, if the switch and socket are part of the same assembly, which is common, you have the option of replacing the current socket with one which will accept a bulb with three wattage levels and you will be able to vary the intensity of the output of the lamp simply by using the new switch. I bought a Hyatt 6 light floor lamp and i have cracked one of the frosted glass shades they are tube like with a pointed end if anyone knows where i can buy one it would be a great help. I have tried ebay and amazon and no luck.

Help with bedroom?
My bedroom is (going to be) French, shabby chic. I’ve got all the furniture which is white/off white/cream. The bedding is sort of an oyster colour and the lamps and accessories are gold. I’ve also got a corona to go above the bed (a box with curtains hanging down). I have a gold mirror with two dark bronze plaques either side of the mirror opposite the bed. What colour do I paint the walls? Do I wallpaper? If so, what colour?! Help!! Also, should I have carpet or wooden floors? How dark should the wood be?

I always think of blue when I think of French Shabby Chic….that lovely mid blue colour. It would look beautiful with the off-white/cream furniture and the oyster colour, also the gold and the dark bronze.
Wallpaper could work but I think a plain painted wall would be more in keeping with your look.
The floor should be a lightish colour I think…..not too new looking of course – maybe an antique pine.
