Light Therapy for SAD?
Has anyone ever used light therapy? I am thinking of buying a light for light therapy, but they are quite expensive and dont want to waste my money. Was looking for some extra reviews. I am currently looking a combination light, of a sunrise simulator light, with a desklamp style lamp (two separate lamps), thinking that because I hate mornings so much, the dawn simulator may help my circadian rhythms in addition to the sunlight simulation. I already know that the more sunlight I get the better off I am, so I am really hoping that light therapy will help. Just looking for suggestions. Is a desk lamp an OK style or do I really need that big, bulky overhead style?
So a box style is more important than a desk style? The desk style is not as good?
You can use the desk lamp. It may take a little longer for you to notice the change in your mood, but it isn’t as bad as having a huge bulky light and paying a lot of money for it. I do suggest that you get the light therapy box though. They are quite helpful.

How to improve G4 “Desk Lamp” iMac?
My iMac is getting slower and slower to use. I’ve had it for 5years, and it probably just needs to have a lot of my videos deleted from the hard-drive.
Currently have 512MB and 256MB SDRAM memory on a 800MHz processor.
I plan to install more RAM to make it faster to run. Would there be anything else I can do to make my system run better?
Someone suggested installing a new operating system, from OSX 10.2.8 to the latest one (“OSX leopard” i believe).
Would this be possible or even beneficial?
Any tips would be very much appreciated.
Unfortunately this isn’t really a simple answer, the most likely culprit is ‘bloat’ in your user library, system library and root library. This happens as programs get installed and deleted, preference files get added and they build up over time, giving the os more and more to deal with, using up available RAM & making the os (and your user specifically) slower to work with.
The best solution is to rebuild the hard drive from scratch, giving the machine a fresh start.
Before you start, make sure you have install disks for all the software you use as well as the serial #’s for those programs (there’s no point in doing this if at the end you can’t use your computer for all the same software you did before) you should also take down the passwords for any email addresses and websites you regularly use (these will be erased when you rebuild your user)
Next start with backing up your hard drive to an external hard drive (since the stock hard drive in that machine is a 60Gig even a very small hard drive by todays standards will have plenty of space to back it up, so it won’t cost you very much) using a program called ‘Carbon Copy Cloner’ which is donation based shareware (they suggest $10, it’s worth it). This backup is therefor two reasons, one it saves all your files, emails, pictures, songs, videos etc… and two, it’s there in case something goes wrong with the installs, you’ll still be able to startup and run your iMac from the external drive like it was before, and check the keychain for any passwords you may have missed.
Once the drive is backed up you can format the internal drive using disk utility (must be run from the install disk) and install a new, fresh OS, on that machine. You really shouldn’t be using anything newer than Tiger (OS 10.4.11) as OS 10.5 requires a faster processor (you thought it was slow before… ouch… try it with Leopard).
Once the install is finished you can create your new user and start installing your software. Finish your installs and test your software. Once you’re sure the software is working as it did on the old system you need to import your photos, emails, docs etc.. from the backup drive, you can either do this manually or by using the migration assistant in the disk utilities folder.
Next run disk utility (this time from the utilities folder on your internal drive) and repair permissions on the internal drive.
Then open system preferences and choose ‘system updater’ and click on ‘check now’. Install all the updates, restart and repeat until there are no new updates.
Repair permissions again.
Now reset the PRAM using this procedure:
-Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
-Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
-Release the keys.
If after this whole scenario the iMac isn’t running faster use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the internal drive to it’s original state from the backup you made on the external. Then contact a local Mac service tech for a diagnosis (basically if this doesn’t work then the slowdown is hardware related and will need replacements)

I’ve got to carry a couch, 2 tables, a queen sized bed, 3 dressers, 2 lamps, a desk including my MAC computer set up with all kinds of scanners and printers…etc…I use for my design business, and a manikin downstairs for a carpet shampoo/cleaning tomorrow morning. Where are my elves to do my work for me while I sleep?! Friggin’ lazy elves, I should have known better than to let them in just because they promised me Jesus on paper and was entranced by their pretty white shirts, ties, and especially their bicycles.
All I can say is you can’t trust anything that carries around a bicycle. Why do they have the bicycles in the first place? To escape of course.

Where would I look for something like this? (Or rather, what is it called?)?
I’d like to attach a metal swinging arm to my desk that holds a microphone. I sit very far back in my chair, and I don’t want a clip-on microphone or one that stands on the desk. Plus, it’d be fun to build something. So, I need a swinging-arm type metal thing that swings out and up. Sort of like the one that’s on the lamp in this photo:

Can I use a normal reading lamp as a 12v lamp? What are the maximum watts at 12v?
I would like to use a normal reading/desk lamp (rated 60 watts max) as a 12v lamp attached to a battery. I will only use a 5watt LED bulb but I was wondering if this has the potential to do damaage or to cause a fire. The 60 watts max reading lamp is for use at 240 volts AC so if I am using it at 12v, should I be trying to maintain the same maximum current draw to avoid problems? By my calculations:
60 watts bulb at 240 v AC is current draw of 0.25 amps
5 watts bulb at 12V DV is current draw of 0.416 amps
So, if the manufacturers have put a 60 watts limit on my lamp because the wiring and fittings cannot take more current, I will have problems. Won’t I? If the manufacturers are more concerned about the heat generated from high-wattage bulbs, then obviously I’ll be OK. Thanks in advance for your answers.
The 60W rating is based on the heat created by the specified bulb type. The electrical components can typically handle significantly more power. You will be fine.
