Led Lamp Project
Please check my LED wiring (diagram)?
I’m modifying a clock to feature LED lights so it can be read in the dark
the LEDs I’m using are quite expensive (to me) so I don’t want to get it wrong and have them burn out. I prefer neon lamps because they’ve got a bit larger margin of error but for this project I decided to try LED technology instead.
Please check my proposed wiring for errors…

Given the criteria and information specified in your illustration, all except for one of the answers posted below were incorrect. 20mA is a typical max. current rating for axial-leaded LEDs and will be fine (miniature SMT package LEDs are often lesser rated).
Neon provides a unique appearance, but certainly the hassle and costs of hardware required for the higher voltages must be considered.
Response & comments:
1. YES the LEDs are shown reversed. You can easily remember the way they should be oriented in the schematic drawing by remembering that the arrow for a diode should point in the direction of ‘conventional’ current (ex.: points from POSITIVE to NEGATIVE connections)
2. As you are restricted to 150 Ohm resistors, that configuration will work fine. Also, you will NOT need 1/2W resistors. You can use 1/8W or 1/4W; more expensive/larger 1/2W resistors are overkill.
3. Remember that YES LEDs are slightly inconsistent from each other in their forward voltages, however this should not be noticeable to the human eye in this application (i.e., don’t worry about it).
4. Comment. Remember that you are actually providing around 40mA to the LEDs; 20mA for left, 20mA for right. There is no need to feed the LEDs from a paralleled 150 Ohm (75 Ohm equivalent) source. If you feed each series pair of LEDs from a single 150 ohm resistor you can insure that each LED pair may remain functional in case of a fault or poor connection on the other pair.
Note: In case the LEDs prove too bright, add another 150 Ohm resistor in series with each LED series pair (for a total of 300 Ohms/pair). This will halve the current and provide a visibly noticeable reduction in brightness.

Can I create a makeshift shade for a small desk lamp without burning down my house?
If so, what are some materials one could use to completely cover the exposed bulb?
Sure you can just use a wire coat hanger and make the shape you want and cover the outside with a material or something but be sure nothing is touching the light bulb or you will have a fire. Easier why not go to a dollar store and purchase a shade for a $1.

Do wooden coffee table and end tables look more elegant with leather couches than the metal and glass type?
I understand that leather is not exactly traditional. But I don’t want my condo living room to look like a catolog from furniture store. My leather couches are black. It is not exactly pitch black, but it is a mix of grey/navy blue/black. One will only see the difference, if he/she has a detailed eye. Otherwise, it looks black. Right now, I have oak end tables, and metal and glass type coffee table. Since it is a complete mismatch, I want to upgrade it. Should I buy dark wooden tables or should I buy modern glass and metal finish? Also, please free to comment on accent/table lamps. Should I buy a metal/nickel base with white/ivory/cream color shade or should I buy transparent base with white/ivory/cream color shade? Or should I go for a more darker neutral shade? Thank you.

I’m trying to give my room a pink/zebra theme. Before I start I’ve got a few questions….

Hot pink is a warm color and may be a bit intense for a room that gets a lot of sun. I think you’d be better off painting the room a more neutral color to go with your beige carpet (which I assume you already have). There are tons of beautiful pinky beiges to choose from. When you get tired of the color scheme, it’s much easier to change out the accessory items than to have to completely start over. The pink/zebra theme sounds like fun but I suggest you keep it to things such as a zebra striped area rug, a shiny hot pink ceramic lamp, a stuffed animal zebra on your hot pink comforter, zebra striped throw pillow, jungle poster, and a grass skirt used as a window treatment and decorated with hot pink silk hibiscus flowers. Measure Energy Efficiency?
Im doin a sci project where i have to measure (3 alternative energy resource) efficiency. A wind turbine, Solar Panel, and Hydroelectric generator, to each light a LED. i kno that efficiency is outputted energy divided by inputted energy, but how am i suppose to measure the amount of energy that i put in and amount of energy i get out? for the wind turbine i use a blow dryer, hydro i use the sink and solar i use a lamp please and thank you
The output is going to be measured in wattage. This is going to be done with a multi meter. First measure the voltage by connecting the leads of the multimeter to the leads of the LED. Then measure current by opening the circuit to the LED and closing it through the multimeter. Multiply voltage and current to get wattage.
Now the input. This is a little more tricky. I would also measure the wattage of the input. You can do this with the blow dryer and the lamp. You will have to also measure the current of both of these. Be very careful…you are dealing with a great deal of current and voltage. Then measure the voltage of the outlet you used or you can just use 110 volts. Multiple voltage and current and that is your input wattage. The faucet is going to be the most tricky. The best I can come up with is to measure the joule/sec. of the faucet and convert it using this formula…1J/s = 1 W. I will post the formula to get the energy of the faucet when I get it.

I am curious if these require a xenon upgrade kit or are infact halogen bulbs tinted blue to looklike the xenon style. I read the xenon’s use an arc to produce light rather then a filament however in the picture these look like they have a filament. If so can they just replace my current, yellowish halogen bulbs in a ’06 mitsubishi lancer.

i believe those are valve stem lights so they just screw onto your valve stem’s but if your trying to use HID’s they do need a upgrade kit which costs like 100 bucks for the kit and installation

will 2 diodes from 2 sources but the same power source keep voltage from traveling thru eachother?
I have an LED and need to turn it on with a relay and also a lamp test button. Both are getting power from the same source. If I put a diode on each of the + wires (button & relay) and they use the same – and + source will the diode stop the flow when the button in pushed or the relay changes states?
It will work,
The LED will work from any + source on its anode.
Don’t forget to include a current limiting
resistor in series with the LED.
Current will not pass between relay and test circuit, as if one diode is forward biased, or ‘on’, the other will be reversed biased or ‘off’.
