How do you retrofit existing stage lights to LED?

I’m in charge of the lights at a community theatre. We are trying to save some money, and I want to install LED lamps in our existing fixtures. However, I haven’t been able to find any that would fit our fixtures, or would be able to be turned in the correct direction (all that I’ve been able to find point up, not towards the reflector or towards the stage). We have standard Fresnel and Source 4′s.

Unfortunately, ETC does not make LED Source 4′s. In the future, hopefully they will update the Source 4 line to include a new lamp housing that can hold an LED lamp. Source 4′s are made with specific lamp housings depending on the wattage used. The normal wattage of a S4 is either 575w or 750w (both with HPL lamps). LED’s use considerably less wattage – so they need to make a new lamp housing AND a new LED lamp to work in the Source 4.

As for the Fresnel. There is no such thing as a “standard” fresnel. Is it an Altman Fresnel? Is it an ETC Fresnel? Is it a Strand/Selecon Fresnel? Either way, It’s the same issue as above, you can’t retrofit an old lamp to become an LED.

LED Technology is still in it’s infancy on the stage – I would currently recommend on not getting anything LED unless you are using them for spot effects. The whites are pure white transmission – but they just don’t have the same intensity as a stage light yet it takes several LED instruments to match the intensity of a single incandescent instrument.; and while the light companies do say that if you are using color mixing with the LED’s you can make up to 16,000,000 colors/hues – the actual usable amount of different colors is around 40 colors. LED instruments cannot be used to create a hard edged beam – only an ERS such as the Source 4 can. Also, because you need multiple color LED’s to mix to a certain color – you get several shadows instead of just 1 from a traditional incandescent gel’d source.

You’re only going to be able to find LED Par’s and Fresnel’s – no Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) yet.

I just reread and noticed you want to switch to LED to save money. Think about the big picture – does your facility have the board channels to run LED fixtures? You need to run DMX to each fixture to control their attributes. You need nondim dimmer modules to keep power going to the fixtures. You need to buy DMX cable to wire all of them up. Can your lighting console run intelligent fixtures easily? even though they are LED stationary lights, they are still intelligent. You still have to patch attributes and palettes for them and that can take up in excess of 4 or 5 channels per light! If your board can’t handle them you will have to get a new one (I suggest the ETC ION) that can, and if you don’t have the correct dimmer modules to power the instruments at nondim, you are going to wreck all of your new equipment.

in the box there’s a base the actual ‘lava’ filled glass case and a bulb.

but then what? you don’t just place the glass case on top of the bulb … do you?

The first is light refraction.
The second is the vector force on the spear in flight by the river current when the spear hits the water. (A different chapter in your physics book but it’s still a valid issue!)

My new office is like a jail cell with no natural light and blaring overhead lights. Since I spend so much time here, I want to liven the place up with some plants and dim the lighting some with few floor lamps.

What type of plants (outside of cactuses) would do well in this type of environment?

Bromeliads, Peace Lily, Lucky Bamboo. and a new one for me ZZ plant.
I have been growing these under the conditions you mentioned. There are a lot of plants that will do well in these conditions but these are my favorites.
