Would galvanized Iron piping work as a computer arm mount?

I was looking to make my own computer monitor arm to attach to my desk out of galvanized iron piping, similar to this sites’ lamps: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_1&listing_id=22949205 but was wondering if all that metal would effect my wireless, monitor, or computer at all.

It won’t affect your computer or any of its parts and pieces. If you have a standard CRT monitor, there is a small possibility that the iron pipe could affect it if it happens to be magnetic, but otherwise not at all.

Note that galvanized pipe goes dull after a brief period, and is also more difficult to paint than standard black-iron. Further, the threaded areas are often not galvanized and so are prone to rust. You might consider using regular black-iron pipe (cheaper than galvanized), which when thorougly cleaned takes paint very well. You could then paint it all sorts of neat colors either as individual pieces or fittings or as a whole.

How can I help?

I have never been made “aware” of how much danger our environment was really in. Now I am hearing it everywhere (with the Global Warming issue we are seeing it everywhere) I have decided that I need to do my part. Realistically, I cannot afford to run out a buy a new hybrid car or transform my home into a solar powered station. Other than the energy saving light bulbs and recycling what else can I do to help?

Here are some thing that you can do that you might not have thought of that might be more simple than what was previously described, the “average joe” plan.

All the lightbulbs in your house (as you said) along with recycling, but tell your family and friends about this. The more they see you doing it, the more likely they will be to do it. So try to get other people around you involved as well, and it is as simple as going to a store and buying a lightbulb or buying a trashcan for recycling. You can be the one that starts a change with everyone you know.

Also this one is a little more abstract, but hear me out. Buy your food from local sources, like farmers markets. There is more than likely a farmers market somewhere near you. This is important for many reasons. Think about how far that box of fish sticks has been transferred to get to you. Boxed things from grocery stores are often driven and flown several hundreds of miles, so by buying local, you eliminate the extensive travel that your food goes through to get to you. At the same time you are also helping out your community by putting money back into it, will more than likely pay less, and the quality and care of the food you get will increase immensely. I would check it out.

If you want to get really serious, you could start using public transportation like the train or something like that.

Most of all it is important that you spread your practices to your friends, because that kind of mass action will really make a difference. I heard somewhere that if every household in the country put just 1 cfl bulb in their house (out of the average 100 sockets) that it would save enough energy as all the cars in LA emit in a week or something. That is a lot, now imagine if every socket in the country was a cfl, that is what europe did, and it made a difference.

why does my ceiling fan burn light bulbs as soon as theyre put in?

We use the energy saving bulbs, so its not over wattage. The fan part works fine. I installed this fan myself and double checked the connection between the light fixture and the rest of the fan- cant find anything loose or exposed.

The bulbs dont break, but they blacken and stop functioning after just a few minutes in the fixture. I’ve tried regular fan bulbs and the energy saving ones.

WHYWHYWHY
I should add, as “dangerous” as it is, these fans in our house are “swag fans” or wired to a plug, not hardwired to a switch. So its not the switch being a dimmer.

Plus its a 10 dollar walmart special fan… lol

Check the brass tab at the bottom of the light socket, make sure it’s at a 20 degree angle ~~~~~~~~make sure power is off ~~~~~~~~~~~

If the brass tab has been flattened you are creating an arch that will melt the solder on the end of the bulb and the light will go out.

Second – As Rick stated check the voltage……… inside the socket brass tab to ground and aluminum socket to ground {obviously with the power on at this time} you should get a reading within the scope of 120 volts on one…… and anywhere from 0 to 8 volts on the other.

It’s not completed yet, but the overall design structure is a 3-story condo. The 1st floor is only featured, I’m currently working on the other remaining.

By the way, I have created the furnitures, lamps, tables, etc. by scratch. My DC Online isn’t working and I dislike the 3d blocks they feature. Sorry for the excessive use of mirroring material, I just love how it looks!

1st floor: kitchen, dining/breakfast nook, living room, powder and utility room behind the stairs (the shadow gets in the way, but I’ll fix the lighting when complete with project).

2nd floor: Master bed/bath, and gym.

3rd floor: Library and study (a very nice approch I think because it will be overlooking the outside and the digest of natural light).
