Glass Lamp Font
How do I retrieve the wick in an antique oil lamp?
My father gave me a pair of antique lamps last spring after the power went out and all I had was candles. I moved again and during the move one of the wicks fell into the font and I can’t figure out how to get it back up, I think it’s rusted shut and I’m not sure how to get it off in the first place.
Any ideas?

Firstly, the metal section comes apart for you to fill with oil.
Take the glass funnel off, then try rotating the entire metal assembly side to side. Usually it 1/8 turns and lifts off.
The two wheels may operate 2 wicks or one will move the wick and the other a metal shroud. Depends on type.
see if you can buy new wick. Feed it up through the base while turning free wheel untill the little cogged wheel catches it and feeds it through.
Just make sure the lamp is on a big enough table if you are using it. Most get knocked off from small tables.

My house robbed & palm tree lamps stolen. The shade is almost like a bell shape made of glass, the inside of shade is painted palm tree. Mine is (was) approx 12 – 15 inches tall maybe. Lamp sold at Home Depot in FL, it not on H/D site, they sold a lg lamp, small desk lamp, hanging one all had same painted palm tree. Base of lamp a brownish bronze color. Sorry you have had such a hard time and hope the police will be able to help you. Have you tried checking ebay for photos of lamps? Also, you can try google images using the search term “palm tree lamp” I did see several lamps that might be similar to yours.

New power strip or extension cord?
I need a power strip that has a flat (45 degree angle type) plug. Should I just buy a new power strip? Or, should I get an an extension cord with a flat plug (ie one of these:

In my front room I have a modern light oak cabinet with a matching desk. A modern black three seater recliner and matching chair and a black gloss coffee table. For paint and wallpaper I have white walls with a black wall where my chimney breast is. The back wall is in a white and black damask wallpaper. I’m going to add a bit of vintage french style to my room by using a shabby chic desk chair and a black french chandelier. I was wondering if anyone had any more idea’s to incorporate my designs? Energy Saving Light Bulbs. Good or Bad?
Energy saving light bulbs contain mercury which is dangerous if light bulb is dropped. You have to go through all of the drama of having specialist coming to clean it up for good. But on the bright side they save money. So are they good or bad?
By energy saving with mercury of course we are talking about Compact Flourescents, CFL. I’ve been using them for more than 10 years now and have a bit of experience. I’ve also done a lot of calculations over the years regarding cost of operation and environmental impact.
The mercury is a particular concern of course. Let’s start with that.
All my power here in the southeast comes from a coal plant. The plant’s smokestacks have modern filtering to remove particulants and soot, but some constituents of coal are still released into the air, including mercury, uranium, arsenic, and other interesting elements. (As an aside, coal plants give off thousands of times more radiation than the nuclear plants that everyone is concerned about.)
I don’t have my numbers at hand, but I got them from public sources. Calculating the total mercury emissions by year from EPA reports and dividing them into the megawattage output of the plant gives me the mercury released per kilowatt-hour, which I then compare to the kilowatt-hours of energy used by the CFL during its lifetime. Now as it turns out, the CFL lamps use enough less electricity that they cause theoretical reduced mercury emissions from the plant that exactly matches the mercury in the bulb! So it is a toss up there.
But not quite. The coal steam plant got its mercury from natural sources – coal seams. This is released back into the environment over an area of hundreds of square miles. The CFL mercury goes into single location – the landfill. Where mercury from countless lamps then pools at various locations and could get into ground water since it is heavy and a liquid and will get through any hole in plastic tarps or such things they place under landfills. Now, supposedly we are supposed to be able to take mercury florescents to disposal sites that recover the mercury, but these sites don’t exist in my state. I have tried commercial disposal sites and they do not accept small quantities. I also looked into shipping to an out of state disposal site and the cost of doing so legally would be about $30 per bulb for transport alone since it is hazardous waste regulated by the EPA and has to be sent by special licensed carrier. So do I dump it or what? That’s what my neighbors do. But I have been stacking these bulbs in the garage and they are now taking up a lot of space. This is a serious problem for me.
As you can see, personal experience often brings to light many interesting details of technology that no one had really foreseen. I think the next step will be some sort of federal mandate to have mercury reclamation centers and a tax or fee to support the cost of running them, but then I wonder how much is all that going to cost. How much energy is being used sucking mercury out of these tubes one by one, or driving these tubes from place to place in trucks?
The lights are also far more technologically complex than older ones, with electronic autostart ballasts that include high voltage step up oscillators. These fail. And the circuit boards and components contain toxic chemicals, how much, and of what sort? There’s no information about this. Also, the lights are supposed to last 10 years, but mine have lasted 3-5 years. However, by the time 5 years have passed they have lost a lot of their brightness. This is apparently due to vaporization loss from the mercury, which is worse of an issue with modern lights than older florescents because they now use less mercury. In the old days they would put more mercury in to compensate for loss over time. The upshot is that a 5 year old 100 watt equivalent light CFL is producing about as much as a 60 watt light bulb and has to be converted to use in a closet or dimly lit space. Also, the economics of energy are based on these things lasting 10 years not 3 or 5. This is less of an issue now that CFLs cost about $4 each rather than the $12 each they cost when I first started buying them, but it is still a factor.
On first look it seems like CFLs are a slam dunk and some countries such as Australia have even made the older styles of light bulbs illegal. But when I look at my experience with them and the big picture, I am not convinced that it is a clear win, even though I do like them. For kitchen lights, I use the newer style 4 foot long but very thin florescents and they are bright and cool and seem to last a longer time for some reason. There is still the issue of disposal though.
As far as incandescent bulbs go, there are filaments that will make a bulb last substantially longer, and the cost is the same as regular, but they are not used because GE makes more money selling light bulbs that last 1000 hours than ones that last 4000 hours. The energy use is the same though.
So what is the solution? Well, I recently installed tubular skylights with domed fresnel lenses. These cost $100 for the parts and then you do it yourself, it’s not too hard. I now have brilliant light throughout the house all day long, similar to a 1000 watt light bulb per room, and even enough light to walk about from the moon at night. The energy cost is zilch, and the lighting will last forever. When clouds pass over the sun, the light shifts and changes within the house and it is a beautiful effect.
That might be the best step towards a long term solution. Natural light rather than things made of toxic chemicals.

Led Lamp Problems
What impact do you think the rise of LED lighting will have on the problem of light pollution?
There seems to be two sides to the argument.
One is that LED lighting, being much cheaper to use, will allow people to pollute more and not have to worry about the environmental and/or financial impacts of doing so, which will make light pollution worse.
Conversely LED lighting is much more precise and is easier to use directionally and keep it pointed down. Also, since it doesn’t require the extended recharge times when you turn them on as compared with sodium lamps and other more conventional lights, they will be more practical to use in applications like infrared proximity lighting.
Personally I think LED lighting will decrease light pollution, but perhaps I’m just being naive and thinking that way just because I want to think that way, to make myself happier. What do you think? What other factors do you think I might not have considered here?
The requirements for illumination do not change for the source that is used, be it LED, fluorescent, sodium, or incandescent lamps. People still need a certain amount of light to see, ffectively. Street lights still need to put out a certain amount of light to illuminate the streets to allow for safety, etc.
Switching to LED lights will not cut down on light pollution. In the future, cheaper LED lighting costs may increase the useage of LED lighting for outdoor use, which may actually increase light pollution. However… sodium lamps are still far more efficient than the current LED technology and will be for a few years. Even when LEDs become more efficient than sodium lights, they will still have to become cheaper in order for governments to switch over and start adding more outdoor lights. This may take decades.

So I’m in the void right now between buying a new fish tank set. Right now I have a 10 gallon with a aquatech 10-20 filter. I moved the tank from downstairs where there was a lot of light to my room. Not as much light. I’m saving up to buy a Aqueon 10 or 20 gallon deluxe kit. For now I’m using whatever available light there is and using two led lamps. Will it supply my plants? I some anubis and amazon swords and am getting some more plants.

Energy saving devices and the environment…….?
I have the energy saving light bulbs.
I take public transport when I can.
I walk to and ride a bike to the local shops.
Try to unplug as many electirical items as possible.
We try to do our bit to recycle.
I am now looking into fitting a solar panel or mini wind turbine.
I need to buy a car for work, don’t fancy any of the hybrid’s – any suggestions to a good economical and enviromentally friendly-ish car?
So it’s all a waste of time then…….anyone out there like to counter the argument.
Relax max! Just buy any car and make sure you feed it on Tesco’s bioethanol. Case closed. Despite the emmissions being only marginally better it’s the whole growing process at the other end (bio ethanol is derieved from maize, sugar cane etc) which combats the output of C02.
Oh and as for the solar panels, forget the photovoltaic ones (electric producing panels) since the dont even provide enough power to boil your kettle, neither does a wind turbine. BUT using water heating solar panels (they run water through the solar panel to heat it with the suns rays) you can chomp your heating bill down by half.
Failing that, check out one of the Mini CHP (combined heap and power) units that are available, they run on biomass (which is anything natural that can be burnt) and can provide all the electricity and heating you need in a standalone system.

i have some LED light bulbs. they are great bulbs. only 4w but it can be as bright as a normal 60w bulbs. but their input voltage is 220v-230v. in the US, we use 110v. i wonder if it is ok to use it on 110v lamp or the socket on the wall.

LEDs run on less than 3v each. The lamp is a series/parallel circuit with a rectifier to make the AC into DC.
You will need to rework the power supply to keep the voltages correct for the LEDs to conduct.
